Water Cooler Discussion

Ok, so its inevitable that this would be the next blog prompt and I will apologize in advance for those of you who don't care for this topic.

Today was a day that will go down in the history books. Yup, for the first time in our American history a black man has won the nomination for the candidacy of presidency. (did i say that right?) Either way, it would have been a historical day had it been Obama or Clinton but it appears this country is more prepared to handle a black president than a female president.

So what does that say about our country? Does that mean that we really have surpassed the lines of racism and sexism? We've discussed these two topics in class and many of you have suggested that we have come far from those days and either or of those two issues are practically non-existent. But then there are those of you who beg to differ, particularly those of you, as you will notice, that have traveled or lived outside of South Florida.

For this prompt, think about this topic, you don't need to know anything about politics to think critically about the prospect of having a black male president, the historical moment that this is, what it means for blacks across the country, and IF Clinton gets the vice-presidency or accepts the invititation, what that means for women across the country. Will it CHANGE things. Change is a word that both candidates threw around during their entire campaign and the implications of the words were far different from any of the other candidates who used the word.

And on a side note, for those of you who are interested in the show next week at the Miami Space Planeterium, here is the flyer. I'm picking up tickets tomorrow so if you tell me how many and what night before the end of the weekend I can secure your tickets at $10. If not, take your chance on the website or at the door.
